1:1 Tuition

Community music making is at the heart of The Sound Engine. But every confident performer, every person who stands up and owns their moment - started somewhere. Often, they started here.

One-to-one tuition is the most personal, focused way to work with me. It's a space that is entirely yours - shaped around your goals, your pace. No comparisons, no pressure, no expectations other than your own. Just a genuine commitment to helping you discover what you're capable of.

Sessions are available for musicians of all ages and abilities in singing, flute and piano, from 8 to 80-plus, from absolute beginners to those preparing for advanced examinations.

What We Work On

No two students are the same, and no two sessions look exactly alike. Your lessons are built around you - your voice, your goals, and where you are right now.

Depending on what you're working towards, sessions can focus on any combination of the following:

Vocal and instrumental technique

Breath control, tone, range and posture.

Musicality and expression

Bringing music to life, not just performing the notes

Repertoire

Building a collection of pieces that suit and stretch you

Exam preparation

ABRSM, Rock School, LAMDA and Trinity, up to GCSE, A Level and diploma level. You choose your syllabus and we can help you get what you need to succeed.

Audition preparation

Including music scholarship applications

Performance anxiety

Practical strategies for managing nerves and performing with confidence

Performing with a live accompanist

A skill in itself, and one that sets my students apart

That last point is worth pausing on. Every session uses a live piano accompanist - not a backing track. This is relatively rare in one-to-one tuition, and it makes a real difference. If you choose to undertake an exam, you will be accompanied by us.

Learning to listen, respond and perform alongside a live musician builds a level of musicianship and confidence that simply can't be replicated any other way.

What It's Like

Warm. Focused. Genuinely enjoyable.

Sessions take place in my studio in Christchurch, and from the moment you arrive, the aim is simple: to make you feel comfortable enough to take risks. Because that's where the growth happens.

I've worked with students who haven't sung a note since school, adults who've always wanted to try but talked themselves out of it, and young people who are brimming with potential and just need the right space to flourish. Whatever your starting point, you will be met with patience, encouragement and a healthy dose of humour.

There are no silly questions here. No wrong answers. No moments where you feel judged. Just an honest, supportive relationship built around your musical development - and a lot of enjoyment along the way.

What Changes Over Time

Progress in lessons tends to happen on two levels at once - and both matter.

Musically, you'll notice your voice becoming more reliable, more expressive and more versatile. You'll develop the technical foundation to tackle more challenging repertoire, perform under pressure, and approach exams with genuine confidence rather than just hope.

Personally, the changes are often just as significant. Students regularly describe a growing sense of self-belief that extends well beyond the studio - in how they carry themselves, how they communicate, how they approach challenges. Music has a way of doing that.

My students have achieved 100% success at merit level and above across all graded examinations.

Eleven students earned places in the National Children's Choir of Great Britain in 2026 alone.

And I've supported students through music scholarship applications to some of the country's leading schools - with a 100% success rate.

But the moment I value most isn't the results day. It's the lesson where someone realises, for the first time, that they can really do this.
